Designer Lou Stolp developed the original Starduster as an affordable sport aircraft that pilots could build at home using plans.

The aircraft’s fuselage is built from steel tubing with fabric covering and has wooden wings. The sturdy structure allows basic aerobatics but is not meant for aerobatic competition. A later derivative called the Acroduster has an airframe stressed for serious aerobatics and able to use larger, more powerful engines.

Several decades ago, many homebuilt designs like the Starduster evolved into aircraft capable of winning international aerobatic competitions. As aerobatic flying became more demanding, pilots needed increasingly specialized airframes in order to stay competitive.

Eventually carbon fiber and other composite structures took over and the resulting aircraft made the Starduster and its ilk seem quaint. Still, sport biplanes like the example for sale today are a joy to fly and typically offer an economical route into aerobatic basic flying.
