Each day, the team at Aircraft For Sale picks an airplane that catches our attention because it is unique, represents a good deal, or has other interesting qualities. You can read Aircraft For Sale: Today’s Top Pick at FLYINGMag.com daily.

American Legend is one of a handful of companies that began selling light sport aircraft (LSA) based on the Piper Cub family of classic rag-and-tube taildraggers during the past decade or two.

Enthusiasm for several antique LSA models grew following development of the category as pilots realized the original models were light enough to qualify for the new rule. Reimagined versions like the American Legend Classic Cub combine the antique looks and general flight characteristics of a basic 1940s light airplane with a range of optional modern equipment, including advanced avionics and more powerful engines.

Years ago a longtime friend and vintage aircraft devotee expressed skepticism toward the new Cub “clones,” remarking that pilots who want the Cub experience need to find an original, complete with a 65 hp engine and the most basic instrumentation. Forget about GPS screens, radios, and electric starters. They weigh too much. Get ready for pilotage and hand-propping.

While I still get his point, I also understand why many pilots choose the newer, better-equipped versions like this AL3 Classic Cub. Returning to the basics of aviation can be informative and fun, but when it comes to Cubs, don’t most of us want just a bit more power to fight those occasional headwinds?

This 2007 AL3 Classic Cub has 996 hours on the airframe, Continental O-200 engine, and McCauley 1A90 two-blade propeller.

The factory-built LSA has a VFR panel that includes a PS PM12000 intercom, Garmin SL 40 VHF com, Garmin GTX 320A transponder, GDL 82 with ADS-B Out, and Sentry Mini for ADS-B In. Traditional remaining instruments include airspeed, altimeter, slip-skid indicator, ammeter, compass, tachometer, oil temperature and pressure gauges, and ACK A-30 altitude encoder/digitizer.

Pilots who want a modern interpretation of a Cub that qualifies under light sport rules and enjoys the benefits of up-to-date materials, construction methods, and equipment should consider this 2007 American Legend Aircraft AL3 Classic Cub, which is available for $87,000 on AircraftForSale.
