Video: Flying the Goodyear Blimp Home

Bill Doster

Earlier this month, Garmin invited Flying's editors to join them on Wingfoot One's first trip home to its renovated hangar in Pompano Beach, Florida.

After riding along in the right seat for a bit, chief pilot Michael "Doc" Doughtery let me try my hand at flying the beast.

The experience? Doc said it best: "It's like flying a boat… there's no better way to put it."

Inside and out, Goodyear's newest airship is more advanced than its predecessors. Improvements include a tail engine and tail rotor, as well as full-vector engines, but the most notable is its renovated cockpit, featuring Garmin's G500 glass flight displays.
