An investigation is underway at Charlotte Douglas International Airport (KCLT) after a fatal accident involving an employee and an American Airlines ramp vehicle Monday.
The incident occurred just after 9:30 a.m. EST when an American Airlines employee working on the tarmac was struck by an airline vehicle, USA Today reported. Emergency crews were dispatched immediately, but the employee was pronounced dead.
Neither the names of those involved nor details of the incident have been released. American Airlines and local law enforcement did not respond to FLYING’s inquiries.
"We are devastated by the accident involving a team member at Charlotte Douglas International Airport (KCLT)," an airport spokesperson told FLYING. “Our thoughts and prayers are with the family and our local team members. We are focused on ensuring that all involved have the support they need during this difficult time."
The International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers Union (IAM), which represented the deceased worker, released a statement affirming that the organization would be cooperating with authorities investigating the incident, according to Charlotte’s WBTV.
"The IAM is coordinating with authorities to conduct a full investigation,” the union said. The “IAM has dispatched a safety committee to assist and will provide support to our affected members."
