Charleston Southern University is broadening its aeronautics offerings with the acquisition of Carolina Sky Flight Training, a local FBO based in Summerville, South Carolina.

The deal comes as the school continues to expand its aeronautics program, which is the only four-year college program in South Carolina.

The university initially began a partnership with the flight school in 2021 to offer a professional pilot degree, growing from 19 students to its current enrollment of 150. Students have the option of pursuing degrees in aerospace management, aviation maintenance management, or as a professional pilot.

“This is a historic and transformative moment in the life of our university,” said CSU president B. Keith Faulkner. “This acquisition allows us to reach greater heights and excellence in our education of the next generation of pilots and managers. Whether they dream of flying for commercial airlines, service in [the] Air Force or Space Force, or using their talents to serve in missions, Charleston Southern’s aeronautics program is ready to deliver an outstanding course of study for driven and bright students.”

To handle the growth, Charleston Southern plans to construct a facility on campus to house a new flight simulation lab. Construction will begin this summer.

“This is truly a thrilling time for CSU aeronautics,” said Lloyd Richardson, chair of the CSU Department of Aeronautics. “The program reflects the growing need for quality education in the aerospace industry.”
