Ground Transport Answer: Foldable E-Bikes for Pilots

Ground transportation has never been more accessible or fun.

Many pilots know the struggle of finding ground transportation after flying into a small airport. The long-standing tradition of piloting an airplane to lunch and back is straightforward when the restaurant is on-site at the airport, or when a crew car is provided at the FBO.

But $100 hamburgers aren’t always so easy to access at smaller airfields or more remote locations. 

What if the pilot could bring their own form of ground transportation with them in the airplane? A foldable e-bike could be just the thing to get you from the ramp to your next off-airport adventure.

What Is an E-Bike?

An electric bike, or e-bike, is a bicycle equipped with a battery-powered motor.

Unlike a motorcycle or electric scooter, the motor of an e-bike requires some rider input through pedaling to maintain speed. The electric assist makes managing hills, terrain, and long-distance riding much more manageable, and top speeds can be reached with minimal effort.

Many e-bike models have both pedal assist and throttle-only options to allow for different levels of rider input. With top speeds averaging around 20 mph and some as high as 30 mph, e-bikes are an easy and efficient way to get around without overexertion.  

Foldable E-Bikes for Travelers

Space and weight are always two big considerations for pilots. Cargo space is limited, and total weight as well as weight distribution must be carefully calculated. 

This is where foldable e-bikes come in. Designed to fit into more compact spaces, these types of e-bikes can be stored and transported easily in a car or some types of aircraft. Because they take up less space, they also are great for apartment dwellers and those without a garage or storage area.

For travelers of all kinds, e-bikes offer freedom to explore new places without relying on rental cars or public transportation. And when traveling by car, truck, or RV, there’s no need to secure your foldable e-bike to a rack on the outside of your vehicle. Simply fold it up and place it inside the cab or trunk.

First Look: Testing the HeyBike Mars 2.0

My first introduction to e-bikes was the foldable Mars 2.0 from HeyBike. It’s a rugged-looking bike built for both pavement and off-road use, with 20-inch fat tires, dual suspension, and a 750-watt motor that gives it more power than I expected.

At a top speed of 28 mph and total weight of 75 pounds, it hits the sweet spot between a fully motorized scooter and a traditional bicycle. It’s quick, fun to ride, and has enough torque to comfortably handle gravel, grass, and uneven terrain, as I learned by riding it around my hilly yard and gravel driveway.

Other Mars 2.0 Features

It also features a rear rack, a headlight and tail light, and a bright LED display. The external lithium-ion battery is removable for easy charging and locks into the frame for added security.

Assembly

The bike came from the manufacturer partially assembled, and completing the assembly was straightforward. Even as someone who had never put a bike together before, I felt confident I could do it.

In addition to basic assembly instructions included in the box, HeyBike provides a series of online video tutorials to make it even easier to assemble your new bike. You don’t have to be a mechanic, and it can even be accomplished solo.

Test Rides

Once the bike was fully assembled, I was genuinely impressed with how capable it felt. It accelerates quickly and handles uneven ground well.

For short hops and local exploration, it's very fun and surprisingly powerful. I’m excited to put more miles on it this summer.

What the Mars 2.0 Offers Pilots

One of the biggest selling points to me of the Mars 2.0 is the foldable frame. This is a relatively unique feature that sets it apart from other e-bike models. Because the handlebars and frame collapse inward, it’s easy to store and transport. 

The Mars 2.0 is an incredibly versatile e-bike. It’s perfect to keep in a hangar or garage for quick and inexpensive ground transportation. Its folding design makes it much more travel friendly than other bikes of its size and capability.

Can It Fly?

The Mars 2.0 can definitely fly with the right setup. With folded dimensions of roughly 37-by-28 inches, this e-bike is a little too big to fit in the cargo space of light GA aircraft like a Piper Warrior or Cessna 152. It could fit in the back seat as long as it can be secured and fit within weight and balance specifications.

An easier fit for this bike would be an aircraft with a slightly larger cargo door, like a Cessna 206 or a small turboprop. If you’re flying something with a little more space, the Mars 2.0 could be a game-changer for off-airport mobility. It’s much more realistic to carry than a traditional bike since it takes up less space, and when you bring your ground transportation, you’ll never have to rely on a ride-share or crew car again in order to get a meal or a place to stay.

Even if your airplane isn’t quite big enough to carry it, this e-bike still makes an excellent hangar bike or a travel companion to airshows and camping trips.

Pros and Cons: Is the HeyBike Mars 2.0 Pilot-Approved?

Pros

  • Sturdy frame, tires, and overall construction comfortably handle uneven terrain.
  • Impressive range and speed make this e-bike perfect for short-range trips and sightseeing.
  • For pilots with proper cargo space and weight allowances, this e-bike provides reliable ground transportation. No more getting stuck if the crew car is unavailable.
  • This is a great fit for RV and car camping, road trips, local commuting, and as a dedicated hangar bike. I personally love that it can fit in a car trunk and doesn’t require an external bike rack.

Cons

  • It’s fairly heavy and may be difficult to lift solo for some pilots.
  • It may not be the right fit for some light GA aircraft due to size and weight.

Tips for Flying With a Foldable E-Bike

Even in GA aircraft, lithium-ion batteries are subject to strict regulations when flying. It’s important to always secure the battery properly when flying or transporting your e-bike.

For commercial flights, the Mars 2.0 battery would need to be removed and may not be allowed onboard at all, so always check with the specific airline or regulating authority if you plan to transport this bike by air.
