Key Takeaways:

  • Washington Manassas Airport (KHEF), formerly a general aviation airport, has received FAA Part 139 certification, allowing it to begin commercial passenger service by late 2027.
  • This certification positions KHEF as the D.C. area's fourth commercial airport, expected to accommodate up to 3 million passengers annually and add thousands of commercial flights.
  • The airport underwent a multi-year, $125 million renovation and expansion, supplemented by over $46 million in FAA investments, to meet federal safety standards and upgrade infrastructure for commercial operations.
  • The move is anticipated to boost local economic growth and provide an additional commercial aviation option for the Washington D.C. area, with a low-cost carrier expected to be the first to offer service.
