Power Flow Adds Airframes to Approved List

Power Flow’s tuned exhaust adds
horsepower and reduces
fuel flow.

A tuned exhaust system, developed by Power Flow Systems, is now approved for installation on the Piper Cherokee 140 and on Cessna 172s equipped with 180-horsepower engines. According to Power Flow, a Cherokee powered by the 150-hp Lycoming O-320-E2A engine and fitted with the new exhaust system demonstrated a 40 percent increase in rate of climb up to 6,000 feet, reaching that height almost three minutes quicker than with the standard exhaust system.

In addition, between 3,000 and 6,000 feet the engine turned an extra 60 rpm, and fuel flow during the climb was reduced by 1.2 to 2.1 gph. At 5,000 feet, the oil temperature was 20 degrees cooler than it had been with the original system. Similar improvements have been reported on the some 300 systems already installed on Cessna 172s and 177s. The addition of the 180-hp 172s adds those airplanes to the list that already included the 150- and 160-hp Skyhawks. Price of the system for the Cherokees is $3,375; the Cessna system is priced at $3,355 plus shipping. Both come with a 60-day guarantee and a one-year manufacturer's warranty.
