Key Takeaways:

  • Miami Executive Airport is dedicating airspace to test and integrate eVTOL air taxis, autonomous drones, and other advanced air mobility (AAM) technologies, making it one of the nation's first airports to host such demonstrations.
  • The Miami-Dade Aviation Department (MDAD) is partnering with Bell-Dancy Industries (BDI) to install its Autonomous Takeoff and Landing Assistant (ALTA) system, which will collect crucial operational data, manage AAM traffic, and inform future vertiport designs for safe integration.
  • This pilot program is part of Florida's broader strategy to lead in AAM innovation, encompassing the development of an aerial highway network, a dedicated AAM test track (SunTrax), and active participation in the FAA's eVTOL Integration Pilot Program.

One of Florida’s busiest general aviation airports is dedicating a chunk of airspace to study the operation of eVTOL (electric vertical takeoff and landing) air taxis, autonomous drones, and other novel aviation technologies.

Miami Executive Airport (KTMB) has one of the nation’s first agreements to host demonstrations of these aircraft. It will begin testing the integration of small drones within a cordoned off section of the airport, away from active runways. Ultimately, large eVTOL aircraft will join the effort.
