Garmin Announces New Synthetic Vision App

Garmin broke the news just before Sun 'n Fun. It was offering its dedicated synthetic vision technology (SVX) for its G300 (exclusive to the Cessna 162 SkyCatcher) and G3X avionics packages designed for Light Sport and Experimental category aircraft. SVX will be standard on all new G300 and G3X packages and will also be available for download to existing systems. Both systems offer options of single- or multiple-screen configurations. In the single-screen mode, the top half of the display shows the primary flight display (PFD) including 3D depictions of terrain, obstacles, runway designations, airport sign-posts and more. The image is a realistic view of terrain features rising into the sky, rather than the traditional blue-over-brown. The lower half of the screen incorporates the multi-function display (MFD) including navigation, weather and other information. Installations with more than one screen will have the entire PFD on one screen with the other dedicated as an MFD. In aircraft with a compatible traffic receiver such as the Garmin GTX 330 transponder, the PFD will display traffic alerts in standard traffic symbology. Like the SkyCatcher's G300, the G3X incorporates a magnetometer, combined air data and AHRS unit and engine monitoring gauges.
