Announced at this week's Farnborough Airshow, the Pratt & Whitney Canada PurePower family of turbofans attempts to tap geared engine technology to achieve lower fuel burns and higher efficiency. The PurePower PW1000G and PW800 are earmarked for regional airliners and business jets, including Bombardier's developmental CSeries 100- to 149-seat regional jets, also announced at Farnborough this week, and Cessna's super-midsize Columbus business jet. P&WC hopes for efficiencies of more than 10 percent better than competing engines in the same power range. The PurePower PW810C is the engine of choice for the Columbus. The lower fuel burns also translate to lower emissions; an issue of increasing importance, especially in Europe. PurePower engines are also designed to operate on alternative fuels.
