He started taking photos of airplanes at Floyd Bennett Field in the 1930s, and his work has graced the cover of Flying as well as the pages of countless other magazines, books and newspapers. Howard Levy died January 29 at the age of 88. He was buried at the Hebrew Benefit Society Cemetery in Freehold, New Jersey. Besides airplanes, Levy helped immortalize aviation legends including Jimmy Doolittle, Amelia Earhart, Howard Hughes and Igor Sikorsky. As an Army Air Corps photographer in World War II, he captured images of combat in Africa, the Middle East, Italy and India. He was a founder of the Aviation/Space Writers Association and the American Aviation Historical Society. Levy was a fixture at aviation events such as the annual NBAA show and EAA AirVenture, where his enthusiasm and love of flying will be missed.
