Altitude Group LLC has announced its intent to produce a new kit for a speedster called the P85. While no numbers have been released for the potential performance of the sleek composite airplane, the single-seat P85 is designed around a V8 Chevrolet engine that is capable of delivering as much as 400 hp.
The P85 is largely built around Altitude Group's Radial Rocket TD airframe, but it has a completely redesigned nose section because of the new engine selection. The liquid-cooled V8 Chevrolet 400 CID small-block engine that will power the P85 will be rated at about 375 hp, the company said.
The first P85 airplane is largely completed. The engine has already been run and the airplane is scheduled to fly by the end of the year. However, Altitude Group needs some additional funds before it can take the new airplane to the skies. To help raise the required funds, the company has launched a first flight sponsorship campaign in which interested parties can donate $65 in return for sponsorship benefits that include a T-shirt, a commemorative photograph of the first flight and a discounted price for the kit.
Provided Altitude Group can bring the P85 to market, a $16,500 quick build option will be available for the kit, which is currently priced at $49,950.
