A new rule proposed by the FAA would require photo certificates for pilots. Currently, pilots carrying the "old new" tamper resistant plastic certificates must also carry a second government photo ID, such as a driver's license. The new certificates would have to be updated every eight years with a new photo. If approved, the new rule would allow private and sport pilots five years to acquire the photo certificate, commercial pilots four years; and three years for an airline transport pilot. FAA pilot certificates were only recently updated to modern times with new tamper resistant plastic cards replacing the old paper certificates. Referring to the latest proposal, Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood said, "The Department of Transportation is committed to keeping the traveling public safe. This is an important safeguard to help make sure individuals can't pose as pilots, whatever their intentions." Cost of the photo certificate is projected to be $22.
