The 34th Annual Sun ?n Fun Fly-In is set to get underway. This year?s special guest stars, the U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds precision flight demonstration team, is scheduled to headline. The show runs from Tuesday, April 8, through Sunday, April 13.
Like AirVenture, Sun ?n Fun got its start as a small, local event that attracted mostly homebuilders. Today, just about every segment of aviation, from ultralights to bizjets, is represented in Lakeland, and this year?s edition should be an interesting one.
While the fabulous T-Birds in their F-16s are sure to enthrall showgoers, there?s plenty more going on at the show, so much in fact that it?s hard to know where to start. Because it?s the first show of the year, there are generally a lot of product announcements, from new airplane models to the latest electronic gadgets, and even during a season of financial concern, there?s sure to be a hearty helping of innovation and optimism on display.
As it has for the last few years, Sun ?n Fun will host a special light-sport aircraft pavilion, with a number of LSAs in one spot for easy comparison shopping, or just gawking. There will, as always, be an impressive number of warbirds, antiques and cool contemporary designs. And as always, the afternoon airshow will offer a great mix of acts, with some of the best airshow performers in the world taking part every flying day.
If you?re flying in for the show, be sure to check out the official FAA notam for the event, study it well ahead of time, and print and carry a copy of it with you. And while you?re there, be sure to stop by the big red-and-white Flying tent, pick up a T-shirt or two and say howdy. Visit sun-n-fun.org for more information. See you at the show!
