DALLAS —Humanitarian organization Operation Helo is partnering with Robinson Helicopter to enhance disaster relief efforts nationwide, it announced Tuesday at Verticon.

Founded in the aftermath of Hurricane Helene, Operation Helo emerged as a volunteer-driven initiative that mobilized helicopter owners and pilots to deliver lifesaving aid and conduct rescue missions in hard-hit communities across western North Carolina. Co-founders Matt McSwain and Eric Robinson built the organization on the belief that smaller helicopters, uniquely capable of reaching disaster-stricken areas, could be a critical tool in relief operations.

During Hurricane Helene, Operation Helo said it conducted more than 4,000 missions, rescuing more than 450 people, and delivering millions of pounds of lifesaving supplies. The organization also played a key role in restoring communications by deploying 523 Starlink systems to isolated areas.

On Tuesday Operation Helo unveiled a new app designed to connect volunteer pilots with real-time mission opportunities. The platform enables pilots to sign up for disaster relief and search-and-rescue missions, view field maps displaying the locations of available volunteers, and facilitate donations to support aid efforts.

Robinson Helicopter Company pledged to encourage all new helicopter buyers to enroll in Operation Helo’s platform. Additionally, the two organizations are partnering to develop a specialized training curriculum tailored for disaster response, including scenarios such as floods, tornadoes, hurricanes, earthquakes, and wildfires. Pilots will also have access to biannual flight reviews to ensure they are equipped for the demands of these operations.

“At Robinson Helicopter, we understand the unique power of helicopters to reach the most vulnerable in the aftermath of a disaster,” said David Smith, president and CEO of Robinson Helicopter. “They can access areas no other vehicle can, delivering critical aid without further disrupting the environment. We’re proud to support Matt and Operation Helo in their mission to leverage this unique capability for good.”

McSwain emphasized the significance of the partnership, noting that it would allow Operation Helo to expand its reach.

“By integrating Robinson’s state-of-the-art helicopters with our network of pilots and volunteers, we’re poised to ensure that no one is left behind during times of crisis,” he said.

Through its app and strategic partnerships, the nonprofit said it hopes to revolutionize disaster relief efforts, ensuring that critical aid reaches those who need it most. Looking ahead, Operation Helo will debut its new mobile operations center at Sun ’n Fun Aerospace Expo next month in Lakeland, Florida. Attendees of the airshow are encouraged to visit, learn more about the missions, and join the growing network of volunteer pilots and supporters.
