AirVenture 2011 Day 1

With clear blue skies and full crowds, AirVenture 2011 starts with a bang.

With everything from ultralights to jets on display,visitors at this year's show have the opportunity to see thousands of different aircraft.
AirVenture 2011's warbird alley is particularly vibrant, with approximately 350 military-type aircraft on display. For more, check out "Rare Warbirds Heading to Oshkosh."
In appropriate fashion, makeshift military tents line the area.
**The Commemorative Air Force brought a variety of unique warbirds to this year's show, including an airworthy Japanese Zero.

This P-51 Mustang, known as Gentleman Jim, was fired up along the flight line.
Classic DC-3s carved out a spot on the show grounds.
This Navy airplane was part of one of the largest Naval aircraft displays to date. The large Naval presence at AirVenture 2011 is in celebration of the 100-year anniversary of Naval aviation.
Visitors gathered along the flight line for AirVenture's Monday afternoon airshow.
A number of Naval aircraft took to the skies.
**The Aeroshell T-6 Texan Aerobatic Team also performed.

Commonly known as the "Pilot Maker," the AT-6 Texan was the main training airplane for all World War II American airmen.
29-year-old air show pilot Matt Younkin performed a variety of maneuvers in this Twin Beech.
Airshow pilot Bob Carlton performed in his jet-powered Super Salto sailplane.
The aircraft is equipped with a PBS TJ-100 jet engine.
Three Yaks piloted by Aerostar team members fly by in formation during Monday's show.
The Yak first flew in 1976. The aircraft was used as a primary Soviet trainer.
Wingwalker Teresa Stokes moved about the wing of this Grumman biplane known as the Showcat as pilot Gene Soucy manned the aircraft.
REO Speedwagon performed Monday night for the AirVenture crowds.
