The Royal Air Force (RAF) has conducted its first air-to-air refueling of Typhoons with a German Air Force Atlas A400M in an operation aimed at increasing capability as part of an international coalition.
The Typhoon pilots conducted the operations during both day and night flights in order to qualify in refueling from different aircraft types, RAF said. The aircraft are based in the Middle East and operating as part of the International Counter Daesh Coalition.
“Developing this new capability is extremely important as it adds increased flexibility and agility to our air operations here,” Wing Commander Chris Pearson, RAF Typhoon squadron commander in the Middle East, said in a statement. “Operating together strengthens the coalition collectively."
The German Atlas A400M, which is typically configured as a tactical transport aircraft, can also be configured for air-to-air operations capable of a refueling speed of more than 500 kilometers per hour.
The RAF regularly refuels coalition aircraft with Voyager multirole transport tankers, the service's sole air-to-air refueling tanker that is equipped with two underwing pods for refueling, as well as a centerline hose.
According to one pilot, there were subtle differences between the two aircraft.
"We are well trained and experienced in refueling from the Voyager aircraft as operated by the RAF and other nations,” a RAF pilot said following the operation. “Refueling from A400M, however, was different because of subtleties that make a surprisingly big difference, such as refueling airspeed, hose response and markings, basket size and shape, and aircraft lighting at night. The German crews were extremely professional, and we enjoy working with them a great deal."
