“Short takeoff and landing (STOL)” and “piston twin” are not phrases that usually go together unless you are talking about the P2012 STOL produced by Tecnam Aircraft.

The Italian manufacturer presented the new P2012 STOL during a press conference at the National Business Aviation Association's Business Aviation Convention and Exhibition (NBAA-BACE) in Orlando Wednesday.

Orders are now being taken for the P2012 STOL, which has a starting price of $2.75 million. Deliveries will begin in 2024, the company said at a press conference at NBAA-BACE.

According to Tecnam, the P2012 STOL was created as a "rugged and durable high wing, fixed gear design" with the mission of getting into and out of some of the most demanding commercial airports in the world.

“For decades, STOL aircraft market has been left undeveloped and unsupported, leaving operators with very little options for supporting and expanding their operations. Tecnam's response to meeting the needs of these businesses is a modern aircraft that addresses current needs with an innovative solution," Giovanni Pascale, Tecnam's managing director, said.

For the Pilot

According to the company, the cockpit is designed to facilitate single pilot operations, as it is equipped with a state-of-the-art Garmin G1000 NXi avionic system, and a GFC 700 autopilot specifically tuned for the STOL mission.

The flight deck features Bluetooth, flight stream, Iridium as well as weather radar, storm scope, inset map, and synthetic vision to help reduce workload and fatigue while increasing mission effectiveness. The aircraft features two six-cylinder turbocharged engines.

The P2012 is certified for single-pilot VFR and IFR for commercial operations. No type rating is required.

By the Numbers

According to Tecnam, with a maximum takeoff weight of 8,113 pounds, the P2012 STOL can take off in 902 feet and clear a 50-foot obstacle in a total of 1,410 feet. At the maximum landing weight of 8,002 pounds, the aircraft's landing distance is 1,181 feet, with approximately 509 feet necessary to stop in the ground roll.

The company notes that passenger comfort has not been skimped on as the interior is configured for nine seats with a window for each person, with bench or double seats. Each space has a USB port, cabin air conditioning, in-seat cabin hot and fresh air outlet, dedicated reading light, seat pockets and cup-holders. The aircraft has a spacious, in-cabin, luggage compartment, additional nose luggage compartment and under seat storage space.

The P2012 STOL was developed by the Tecnam Research and Development team to be flexible in multiple applications. In addition to passenger transport, the aircraft can be used for cargo, air ambulance, and special missions, and just as easily converted back to passenger operations.

Tecnam completed the preliminary flight tests earlier this year, and now the aircraft is undergoing final configuration flights with the certification phase expected in 2023.
