Each day, the team at Aircraft For Sale picks an airplane that catches our attention because it is unique, represents a good deal, or has other interesting qualities. You can read Aircraft For Sale: Today’s Top Pick at FLYINGMag.com daily.

While Cessna famously rolled out the tricycle-gear 172 during the mid-1950s with great success, Piper had already introduced many GA pilots to the world of nosewheels, less famously, with its PA-22 Tri-Pacer.

Starting in 1949, Piper was among the first companies to turn out tricycle-gear personal aircraft in volume. Even though critics later knocked the Tri-Pacer for its appearance, it was a hit during its yearly years and remained in production well into the 1960s.

Today the Tri-Pacer is enjoying a comeback as many vintage aircraft fans see it as an economical and stylish way into the air. Restorers have made the most of the aircraft’s classic color schemes, which turn heads at the fuel farm and draw compliments at fly-ins. Best of all, the sturdy, stable, four-place Piper is a practical traveling airplane that can handle busy commercial airports as well as backcountry strips.

This 1955 Tri-Pacer has 3,000 hours on the airframe and 1,010 hours on its 150 hp Lycoming O-320 engine. The aircraft is equipped with a Sensenich climb-pitched propeller, 70-amp alternator conversion, spin-on oil filter adapter, and EMI power filter. An auxiliary fuel tank brings total capacity to 44 gallons usable with a range of 500 nm and endurance of five hours.

The IFR panel includes a Bendix KLN 89B GPS with CDI and annunciator panel, uAcvionix AV-30 PFD, Narco Nav-121, Narco DME-890, dual Narco Comm-810 VHF radios, Narco CP-136 audio panel with marker beacon receiver, Sigtronics SPA-4 intercom, and traditional analog engine instruments.

Pilots in the market for a distinctive antique aircraft that captures the feel of the postwar general aviation boom while operating comfortably in today’s complex airspace should consider this 1955 Piper Tri-Pacer, which is available for $45,000 on AircraftForSale.
