They say aerobatics training makes you a better pilot, and I truly believe the origins of that kernel of wisdom trace back to a Pitts biplane.
Designed by Curtis Pitts in the mid-1940s and almost continuously developed, modified, and souped-up ever since, the Pitts Special family of aircraft has challenged and rewarded pilots for decades. While it remains a capable aerobatic machine, long after monoplanes took over the sport’s top ranks, the Pitts can also help pilots sharpen their skills for everyday maneuvers—such as landings.
Starting off with modest 4-cylinder powerplants, the Pitts soon moved up to larger engines including the 6-cylinder Lycoming in today’s aircraft for sale. Later versions even used Russian Vedeneyev M-14 radial engines that were tuned to more than 400 hp to keep up with newer, more extreme flight routines in competition.
This Pitts S-2B has 1,818 hours on the airframe, 1,126 hours since overhaul on its Lycoming AEIO-540-SER engine, and 30 hours since overhaul on the propeller. The aircraft received new covering and was repainted in 1996.
The VFR panel includes a Garmin GTR 225 com radio and CGR-30P digital engine monitor.
Pilots who are ready to train for serious aerobatics or move ahead in the competitive ranks while at the controls of a landmark airframe should consider this 1986 Aviat Pitts S-2B, which is available for $139,000 on AircraftForSale.
