Each day, the team at Aircraft For Sale picks an airplane that catches our attention because it is unique, represents a good deal, or has other interesting qualities. You can read Aircraft For Sale: Today’s Top Pick at FLYINGMag.com daily.
When Frank Christensen tried to acquire the Super Cub design from Piper Aircraft more than 40 years ago, the legendary aircraft manufacturer turned him down. Many pilots are happy that the attempted transaction failed because the result drove Christensen to design and manufacture his own high-wing taildragger for the backcountry—the Husky.
Certified in 1987, the Husky turned heads because it entered the market when there was relatively little going on in general aviation, as the main manufacturers of aircraft had stopped building piston models. The Husky also stood out because it was developed using computer-aided design, which was fairly new.
The Husky also flew well, outperforming existing taildragger models and incorporating thoughtful features that made it easier and more comfortable to operate. With a range of optional equipment, pilots could tailor the aircraft to suit their needs.
This 2003 Aviat Husky has 635 hours on the airframe and its 160 hp Lycoming O-320-D2A engine, and 264 hours since overhaul on its Sensenich fixed-pitch propeller. The aircraft is equipped with a B&C oil filter, oversize tires, winterization kit, opening windows, strobe lights, and 60-amp alternator. This Husky carries 50 gallons of usable fuel and has a useful load of 767 pounds.
The VFR panel includes a Becker digital com radio, L-3 Lynx NGT-9000 ADS-B In and Out display, Garmin 396 hand-held GPS, traditional flight and engine instruments, Ameri-King AK-450 ELT, and USB power outlets.
Pilots looking for the utility and backcountry fun of a Piper Super Cub in a more modern taildragger design should consider this 2003 Aviat A-1B Husky, which is available for $129,900 on AircraftForSale.
